Towards the end of the 1990s Bernd Fischer began to take an interest in realizing the images which he had developed in panel painting within the media of glass painting. His picture motif at that time was ideally suited to this.
He had worked for several years with x-ray images, transparencies which make conditions which are otherwise invisible to the human eye visible. At the same time he became increasingly fascinated with historical glass painting. The colored windows in old churches whose "simple craftsmanship" in turning the colourless into colourful, the great harmony with natural light and the colourful vividness brought about by ever changing lighting conditions are his models. In his first glass paintings he used the paints he was accustomed to and acrylic glass. Subsequently he created works with ceramic paints on float- and antique-glass whose colour intensity greatly appealed to him.
For most of his works Bernd Fischer decided on float glass. He makes use of the differentiated possibilities for applying colours offered by the clear glass, the opportunity to use larger formats and the chance to process already processed panes.
He succeeds with float glass in creating images with contemporary motifs and methods within the medium of glass painting. In this way he was able to stick to his working style and utilize industrial and manual methods in his work process.
